Oh man do I hate leaving party-pooper-like comments, but…

    It’s Studio Bee Train…

    And…

Yeah. I should probably stop because my opinion of the anime version of Tsubasa is pretty low, and since I can’t say anything nice I’d better not say anything at all.

The soundtracks, however, are totally worth the head explosions. (*crosses fingers for a domestic release*)

Oh naturally the manga is far superior, I don’t even begin to contest that, but I think the anime art is very pretty. ^^;; And I’d like a shot at seeing it more than 300 pixels wide on my laptop. :P

With you on the OSTs and why bother? I just pick up the Japanese ones, heck, even Amazon is offering them as an import. (I just wishlisted #4, #3 was KILLER.)

I also bought the Japanese OSTs because I couldn’t wait for them. But in general I think that any domestic release of any anime music is a good thing, because it’s going to be half the price of a Japanese CD, and it exposes more people to the music.

I suppose that’s true, but I’ve found, at least with game soundtracks, that the releases are often truncated (at times, SEVERELY) and so while you’re thinking “gee! Golly whiz, the Final Fantasy ___ OST!!” in reality you’re getting one of THREE or FOUR discs worth of music.

I don’t buy many anime OSTs, so I don’t know if their domestic releases follow the same pattern the game ones do, but personally, I trot over to Kinokuniya or order from CD Japan….

I make up for this terrible fan-ness by attempting to own both Japanese and English releases for ALL manga I read (so far, I’ve succeeded) and any anime I really care about (read: BSSM, eheh.)

Personally I don’t know of any domestic anime soundtracks that have been truncated, outside of the very very old-school titles like Tenchi Muyo. In the past couple years domestic anime releases have pretty much exactly mirrored their Japanese counterparts, with discs being clearly labeled as “Volume 1,” “Volume 2,” etc. So you know that you’re buying one disc out of a multi-volume series, and the rest of that series will soon be available if it isn’t already.

Plus, there’s still a sizable chunk of anime fandom that doesn’t watch anime before its domestic release (can you imagine?!), so for them the music will be new, and the domestic soundtracks will be a blessing.

Wow, that’s refreshing to hear, I had no idea. Fantastic, then, and cheers for domestic soundtracks!

(I am, you may be surprised to hear, one of the unwashed masses that doesn’t see the anime before its domestic release. A friend gave me a few episodes of Tsubasa, but that’s the only time I’ve ever watched something on my computer. ^^;; )

Good for you. I normally wait myself because I’m kind of anti fansubbing especially when the show’s coming out in English a year later. Those groups that are translating the Tsubasa manga despite it obviously being released in English are really pissing me off. SO MANY people are just downloading their scans and not buying the real deal. It’s ridiculous.

I agree the anime wasn’t as good as the manga, but there are some great anime episode especially in season two where they actually limit most arcs to 3 or 4 episodes (faster pace) and write several interesting anime only arcs. The season 2 finale is brilliant!

I’ve got a feeling I’ll like the English version better as the Japanese actress for Sakura just friggin’ annoys me. She’s just a boring person. I want to reach out to her and strangle her. All the other voices I like but her’s needed serious recasting.

I’m betting an English VA will give the character that spark the Japanese one lacked. The manga Sakura had so much energy but the anime one seems like she’s suffering from a heart disease or something even before she loses her feathers.

I’m with you on waiting for the domestic releases, I’ve just never been much of a fansub person, unless it’s something that just isn’t coming out domestically… *cough*RoseofVersailles*cough*

Looking forward to this one, though I’m not sure I’ll buy it, as we rent almost everything these days unless Elon wants to show it to his anime club.

I can’t say I’m anti-fansubbing in the… old… sense, I *still* have my VKLL sub tapes (don’t have the heart to throw them away, I guess) and I did his VHS-DVD exchange program for Stars, so I have that fansubbed, but only because it never made it over here. But as for the new “download it hours after it shows in Japan, fansubbed” craze, I just don’t… get it. I actually did purchase a terrible fansubbed copy of the entire Full Moon wo Sagashite anime, but I couldn’t bring myself to watch it, I threw it away. Yes, I’d rather buy all 13 DVDs as they’re released from VIZ. (I’m THRILLED that they’re being released.)

Mostly I’m opposed to scanlations, and the sad side effect of their being so popular, from what I’ve seen, is that nobody bothers to do text translations anymore. Since I prefer to buy the original tankoubon and read it with text translations, most of the time I’m just out of luck. I could never find any translations of Shinshi Doumei Cross and although I’ve got them up to vol. 6, I haven’t read a drop — to my chagrin, I only got a synopsis of the plot when I went to VIZ’s official SDC page a week or two ago. Thankfully, Tsubasa’s English releases are well-done (as far as I know, I love the detailed end notes) and they come out regularly.

Brad or Kotetsu, have either of you heard (or did I hear from you) the rumor that CLAMP’s trying to end Tsubasa at vol. 20? (How can they do that? I try not to spoil myself but from LJ rumblings, it doesn’t sound that feasible….)

Beth - Funny, Lenneth has fansubs of Versailles as well, for the same reason. ^^; I don’t buy much anime either — Full Moon is the first series I’ve collected as they’re released, I can’t even say that much for BSSM (I was broke at the time, had to find them all after they were OOP.)

As far as I know there’s no confirmed end date though it has been stated that Tsubasa will end before xxxHolic and that xxxHolic will go for a bit after to kind of finish everything up.

Apparently xxxHolic will become more necessary reading to fully understand Tsubasa in the stories to come.

  • 11 Hoshichan // Jan 31, 2007 at 5:06 pm

Interesting. I’m hooked on xxxHolic anyway, it’s so… intriguing. Different. Disturbingly telling of the hidden state of people’s hearts….

  • 12 Kotetsu // Feb 1, 2007 at 3:00 am

Without spoilers, I will say that it is VERY possible for CLAMP to end Tsubasa at Volume 20. The last major dangling plot thread (Fai and Ashura) is set up in volume 18 and will be presumably resolved in volume 19, and after that, that only leaves Fai Wang. Xing Fo is already out of the picture.

  • 13 Brad // Feb 1, 2007 at 4:24 am

I’m still hoping for another Holic and Tsubasa movie after both the mangas have finished to kind of bookend them both. The first two movies rocked.

  • 14 Hoshichan // Feb 1, 2007 at 10:24 am

Interesting, interesting… we’ll see what happens! (I haven’t seen the movies, Brad, but they sure looked good….)
