Saturday tomfoolery

November 10th, 2007 · 4 Comments

Funny, I talked about work all day, thought about writing all day, and didn’t get anything on either front accomplished. What I did get (along with Johan and Lenneth) is some new mugshots, seen to your left and in various places. (Yep, all three are different pictures. Particularly proud of the TAFL one, although it took me fifteen minutes to remember how exactly you assemble the complete Eternal Tiaru. The locking rings on the extension rod always throw me off, sigh.)

(I interrupt this post to comment that the exotica Johan is playing next-door sounds like he’s got a group of people in his office, holding a virgin sacrifice. Rotten weather for it, if you ask me.)

Goodness, the new picture is nice. Much, much better than the helmet pic. Phew. Sick of that pic.

I lounged around, I visited with my dad, I did some note-taking on Olivine (which I suppose counts as writing work. Gotta get those goals in mind now.) I did a little laundry, assessed the house and determined that, indeed, there is no FOOD in it, went to dinner with Lenneth and Johan, came back and played with photos for… forever, and now here I am, online as I have been throughout the day, with absolutely no work accomplished whatsoever. I have to hand it to myself; the amount of work I avoided is monumental. I suppose there’s always Monday.

As far as Olivine goes, I’m using VoodooPad as an offline wiki to organize my magic system. So far it’s been a lifesaver: that I can post whatever I need, cross-reference anything and paste as many photos as I want on each page, is really killer. Better than anything I could have hoped to invent as an online version, and I don’t have to be attached to a phone cord to update. Great little Mac program, I highly recommend it. I’m starting to work out the magic system as a whole for this world; starting with the physical mechanics, moving up to the cultural/societal impact, and thence to the actual plot of the first book. Taking eleven months of notes and breaking it down into an interdependent string of questions is eye-opening so far, and I’m getting a lot of insight on my initial ideas, and how the world has progressed in my head. Definitely a lot of wrinkles to iron out, for better or worse.

I feel encouraged by the progress, both in some personal things and Olivine’s development. Now, for more writing work, since I have no head for anything else (and hey! It’s already past 11 pm. Hooray for the weekend.)

    Glad to hear that Olivine is taking shape! I can’t wait to see what it becomes. :)

    Taking shape? Yes. Easily? Nononono. The complexities of magic make me wonder how Jo stuck it out through seven years of development and a seven-book plot arc. @_@;

    I’m glad that you’re getting inspired again on Olivine :)

    I am. I’m amazed at the amount of magic system ideas that came out of the next post, just from two comments. Kotetsu made a lot of correlations that I was thinking too hard to see (like BSSM, Star Wars, etc.)
