Further adventures at the library

February 27th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Today I dropped off two books in favor of picking up six more, most ILLs. I got a few jewelry picture-books, a gemstone book, a history of Wales and The Queen of Attolia, because I just can’t stay away from that series, it seems. (Unfortunately, while looking for a “please shunt this copy over to MY branch of the library” button, I got completely spoiled from the blurb about The King of Attolia. T_T; THANK YOU PUBLIC LIBRARY.)

I’m using the library to get anything on my research wishlist that I’m unsure about — books I’ve been recommended but haven’t seen in person, things I’ve found that sound interesting but I know nothing about, picture books I’d like to look through once or twice, but don’t want to buy, necessarily — as well as anything I feel I need for my writing, but can’t afford to buy at present. It’s working well so far, and although not every book I get turns out to be useful, that knowledge is in itself useful. In one recent case, I saved myself $58. ^^;

Writing-wise, I’m at an impasse — at least, I feel like I’m at an impasse — with my world-building. I’m completely unsure what to develop next, whether that be more magic system, more geography, more characters. Lenneth assures me that, no matter what I choose, any development will further along the rest, and I know that’s probably true, but I’m struggling with it today. Something that developed in the free-writes I’ve been doing is now conflicting with some other plans I’d had for the magic system, and I’m not sure which should be kept, and which dropped. I’m hoping one of the books I got today will give me ideas for an alternate to the above — or that perhaps I can solve it without dropping either.

World-building is so hard when you’re timid and indecisive….
