Did some character work on the Selene story last night. I got some interesting back-story, and although I panicked for a bit about whether there was enough middle story to tell (back and forward-story are off-limits, due to contest requirements) but I think I’ll be okay. The point is, it’s going somewhere, it’s interesting to me, and as I develop the character, plot will hit me. In theory. Still quite a few things I don’t know about her. Maybe it’s not so important.
I saw fit to revise my writing goals a little, again. I think rewriting them out by hand helps me focus; this time I added some more specific details. I also signed the card, which I guess makes them official?
- I will create my fantasy world setting, Olivine.
- I will complete the first draft of Book 1, no less than 90,000 words, by December 31, 2008.
- I will write a short science fiction story and submit it to a contest or magazine.
- I will sell Book 1 to a reputable publisher by December 31, 2009.
- I will be considered for a Hugo, Nebula, World Fantasy or Mythopoeic Award within five years of publication.
So there you have it. Added sci-fi awards, got more specific about my short fiction. Still think I’ll have a book draft by 2009. (Silly old me.)
